And when that happens, you may be too self-conscious, lose confidence and even self-esteem because of discoloured teeth. So how exactly does teeth whitening work and is this the right procedure for you?

What Is Teeth Whitening?

Teeth whitening, also known as dental bleaching, is one of the most common dental procedures we perform at our clinics. It is a cosmetic technique that’s designed to improve the colour and appearance of the teeth.

There are various methods used to whiten stained teeth. These can range from simple at-home treatments such as bleaching strips and bleaching gels to in-practice procedures such as laser bleaching. These treatments use an oxidizing agent that will penetrate the enamel of the tooth and bleach it. The result is visibly whiter, healthier teeth.

How does the zoom! in-office system work?

The Zoom! light-activated whitening gel’s active ingredient is Hydrogen Peroxide. As the Hydrogen Peroxide gel is broken down, oxygen enters the enamel and dentin, bleaching colored substances while the structure of the tooth is unchanged. The Zoom! light aids in activating the Hydrogen Peroxide and helps it penetrate the surface of the tooth. A study has shown that use of the Zoom! lamp increases the effectiveness of the Zoom! gel by 33% or more, giving an average improvement of eight shades*.

Teeth Whitening at home

An impression of your mouth is taken. This impression is used to cast a model of your teeth. After the model is prepared, a tooth bleaching tray will be formed over it.

This teeth bleaching tray will accommodate the bleaching gel, and precisely fit around your teeth.

Once at home – on a daily basis – you will inject a small amount of the teeth bleaching gel into the tray. You then place the tray over your teeth, and wear it for a few hours. You can wear the tray anywhere, but most people choose to wear it while they are sleeping.

Results can be seen after the first night, but maximum whiteness is usually achieved when the tooth whitening process is continued for 7 to 14 nights.

What Causes Teeth To Discolour?

As we age, teeth can become stained or discoloured due to regular wear and tear. Food choices also contribute to teeth staining, along with drinks, such as dark-coloured beverages and sodas. Some habits, such as smoking, can also lead to teeth discolouration, as will some types of medications, such as antibiotics, which have been known to produce stains in teeth.

When patients come to one of our clinics, we will assess their dental health through their lifestyles, medical history, diet and habits. This will help us discover the root cause of teeth staining and as such, guide us on which technique is best.

How Are Whitening Techniques Chosen?

Every patient is different, so we take into careful consideration their specific needs when performing a specific tooth whitening procedure. There are certain factors that will help us determine the best and most effective technique to use. These include:

As your partner in good oral health, we will be recommending proper care of your pearly whites post-procedure. This will help preserve your beautiful new smile, minimize any sensitivity and significantly prevent future stains and discolourations.
