It is important to know that your doctor is keeping up with the constant and rapid advancements in modern technology. Digital x-rays are just one more advantage you will have at your disposal when you visit our practice. Instead of using a conventional film, we use a special computer sensor which puts the x-ray picture directly into the computer and which allows us to reduce the amount of harmful radiation by nearly 90%. Since the pictures are in the computer, we can enhance the images to better diagnose conditions – often before they become problems. This proves to be much more convenient for you because the x-rays can then be displayed on the computer right in front of you!
An x-ray is imaging involving the use of electromagnetic radiation to pass through the body and creating an image. X-rays look the way they do because the x-rays can easily pass through skin tissue and transparent materials but not opaque and solid materials. Traditional x-rays require significantly more radiation to produce an image than digital x-rays. This is because an immediate image is created using a digital image capture device, which is similar to the way we capture photographs using a digital camera.
Traditional x-rays require the image to develop and that can be a lengthy process. We all remember having an x-ray then taking a large envelope to the dentist and waited patiently while they looked at the image on an illuminated wall, after which we would be told which treatment have. A digital x-ray on the other hand is much more patient friendly as the image is instantly downloaded onto a computer where you and the dentist can sit together and discuss your treatment and you can see the inside of your mouth.
Digital x-rays are not only easier to administer; patients are exposure to less radiation, so it is a dramatic move forward in x-ray technology.
